Clinically proven to be safe and effective, both Botox and Dysport are used to target the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. However, since the two are not the same, It’s important to recognize the differences and benefits of each treatment before choosing which one to follow through with. At RNA Medical Aesthetics in Johnson City, Tennessee, we strive to thoroughly educate our patients about both options before recommending treatment. What are the differences between the two? Which option is right for you?
What Is Botox?
Botox is a highly effective anti-aging treatment that dramatically reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while preserving the natural composition of the skin. It is an injectable purified protein solution that relaxes muscles and helps fade wrinkles. With Botox, only the wrinkle-causing muscles are injected with the protein solution, naturally preserving other areas of the body.
While Botox is not a facial filler, it can be used on multiple areas of the face. Botox is effective for treating fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows (frown lines), around the eyes (crows feet), and at the corners of the mouth (marionette lines). Botox can also be used on the neck and other areas of the body.
What Is Dysport?
This is very similar to Botox in terms of the purpose of treatment. It is also an injectable filler used to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Working in a similar way as Botox, it’s injected into certain points of contracted and permanently wrinkled muscles, helping them to relax and preventing further muscle contractions.
Treatment, however, cannot be performed on all areas of the face. Treatment is used only to target moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Unlike Botox, treatment cannot be performed on areas around the eyes, at the corners of the mouth, or on the forehead. Treatment also cannot be used on the neck or other areas of the body.
How Soon Will I See Results With Botox?
Treatment sessions are fairly quick, lasting for only about 10 to 15 minutes. Results are seen as early as three to four days after a session. Patients notice a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles relatively quickly.
How Soon Will I See Results With Dysport?
The results of this treatment are also noticeable soon after the initial session. After a quick treatment session, lasting for about 10 to 20 minutes, patients begin to notice improvements almost immediately. Most patients see results within two to three days after treatment.
How Long Does Botox Last?
While every patient reacts differently to treatment, Botox is FDA-approved to last for up to four months. After four months, muscles will likely begin to contract again and wrinkles may start to reappear. A medical provider can develop a customized treatment plan to help patients schedule appointments in order to keep their fine lines and wrinkles at bay.
How Long Does Dysport Last?
Treatment is shown to help reduce fine lines between the eyebrows for up to five months. After five months, muscles between the eyebrows may begin to contract again and wrinkles are likely to reappear. Patients can schedule repeated treatments as wrinkles begin to reappear.
Do the Results Look Natural?
Because the purified protein solution used by both these treatments is only applied to target contracted areas of the skin that cause wrinkles, treatments leave other areas unaffected. This results in the preservation of natural skin composition. Natural facial expressions are left unbothered and patients are still able to smile, laugh, and frown after treatment. Other areas of the face are left unaffected. Patients come out of treatment with natural-looking results and smoother looking skin.
Who Should Use Botox?
Botox is a great treatment option for men and women of all skin types and ages. Patients who are in overall good health, not pregnant or breastfeeding, and who do not suffer from certain neurological conditions are great candidates for Botox.
During a consultation, our medical provider will check to make sure you don’t suffer from pre-existing health conditions. Botox is also a great option for those who want a quick and effective treatment without surgery or extended periods of downtime.
Who Should Use Dysport?
Treatment is effective for a wide variety of patients and is inclusive of all skin types. Treatment is recommended for those who are under the age of 65 and are looking to temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles between the eyebrows.
Treatment is not recommended for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, allergic to cow milk protein or botulinum toxin products, or who have a neurological condition. Certain other factors may impact whether you should follow through with treatment, and we can help to determine if it’s right for you.
Proven Benefits of Botox
Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic skin treatments on the market. It’s proven to fight signs of aging by effectively minimizing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Botox has also been proven to medically treat various muscle movement disorders, spasms, and even migraines.
Botox treatments are fast, demand little recovery time, and provide results soon after treatment. Lasting for up to four months after treatment, Botox is sought after by many patients for its numerous benefits.
Proven Benefits of Dysport
Similar to Botox, treatment with this injectable works wonders at combating signs of aging. Since treatment is specifically used to target wrinkles that appear between the eyebrows, it leaves the face looking natural. People won’t even notice that you had a treatment done unless you choose to tell them!
30 days after treatment, the majority of users noticed that their frown lines improved from “moderate/severe” to “none/mild” with at least a two grade improvement. Approved and used in 69 countries, this is becoming the go-to treatment for frown lines between the eyebrows.
Is Treatment Safe?
Treatment with both injectables are FDA-approved and clinically proven to be safe for qualifying patients. Because treatment is non-surgical, there is no extensive downtime after sessions. Because recovery rates are impressively quick, patients can even go back to work or to their usual routine after treatment.
How to Prepare for Treatment
There are no medically required pre-treatment steps to take before getting treatment with either of the two. There are, however, some things that patients are recommended to avoid before undergoing treatment. Medical providers suggest avoiding fish oil and blood thinners one week before treatment. Patients are also advised to avoid alcohol and caffeine 24 hours prior to a treatment session.
It is also recommended that patients discontinue Retin-A treatment two to three days before their session. Patients are recommended to wait at least two weeks after undergoing specific skin-rejuvenation cosmetic treatments such as laser-based treatments, facials, or micro-dermabrasion before scheduling a session. Patients should also make sure to arrive at their treatment sessions without makeup.
What to Do After Treatment
Medical providers recommend that patients avoid lying down flat on their faces and touching or rubbing treated areas for at least four hours after treatment. Patients should also continue to avoid blood thinners and fish oil for at least three days to one week after treatment. Wearing makeup, hats, or headbands should also be avoided until the day after treatment.
Can I Use Both Treatments Together?
There is no medical or scientific evidence suggesting that both treatments can’t be used together. However, since Dysport is only used to treat frown lines found between the eyebrows, the use of a combination of both treatments should be limited only to this area of the face. A combination of both cannot be used to target fine lines and wrinkles on other areas of the face.
The same principle applies to patients who would like to use one of the treatments after the results of the other begin to fade. As long as treatment is limited to the area between the eyebrows, Dysport can be used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles after the results of Botox start to wear off.
Botox can also be used to treat frown lines between the eyebrows after the results of the other treatment start to fade. It’s imperative, however, to notify your medical provider if you have used one or the other in the past before choosing to change treatment.
Are Treatment Units Equivalent?
The FDA reports that it requires a minimum of two times more units of Dysport to achieve the same results as Botox. This means that if a patient chooses to receive Botox treatment and is given 20 units, the same patient would require 40 units of the other injectable to see similar results.
How Many Units Will I Need?
The amount of units needed for Botox depends on the part of the face being treated and on the patient’s individual reaction to treatment. For example, fine lines around the eyes known as crow’s feet usually require approximately 20 units of Botox.
The amounts of units needed for the other injectable also depend on the individual patient and can be determined with a medical provider. Remember, patients usually require two times the units of Botox to achieve similar results with Dysport. Most patients have found that 40 units of treatment are needed to effectively reduce frown lines between the eyebrows.
Will My Insurance Cover Treatment?
Most cosmetic treatments are not covered by health insurance plans or Medicaid. However, patients are encouraged to check with their health insurance providers to find out what specific treatments are included in their plans. Certain health insurance companies may offer benefits or plans for cosmetic treatments.

Both are proven to be safe and highly effective, and many patients have found success in battling signs of aging with these treatments.
