At RNA Medical Aesthetics in Johnson City, TN, our goal is to help our clients look and feel their best, even if they don’t have the time or money for an invasive aesthetic procedure. If you eat reasonable portions of healthy foods, exercise at least five days a week, and still can’t budge that belly, laser liposuction can help.
You probably grew up hearing that if something sounds too good to be true, it is. Laser liposuction is different. It may sound unbelievably good that you can sculpt your dream body without scalpels, incisions, sutures, stitches, or scars. But you can. Today, we answer our most frequently asked questions about this treatment, including if (and how) it works.
FAQs About Laser Liposuction
Does Laser Liposuction Really Work?
Laser lipo can really be used to non-invasively remove excess fat cells from your body. However, it’s important to note that it is most effective when you have at least an inch of pinchable fat. If you’re not sure if you have at least an inch of pinchable fat, buy body fat calipers on Amazon.
How Does Laser Lipo Work?
Laser lipo works by using heat from laser light energy to heat and liquefy excess fat cells. Once the fat cells in the treatment area get hot enough, they die. After they die, they continue to be heated until the tissue holding the fat cells together break apart and liquefies. Once liquefied, the fat cells make their way through your lymphatic system.
Once they have gone all the way through your lymphatic system, they end up processed by the deoxycholic acid in your gut. Finally, they are transported out of your body as waste via your urine, just like dietary fat.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
The duration of your treatment depends largely on the size of the areas being treated, the number of areas being treated, how much fat is in the treatment area, and how much fat you’d like removed. However, on average, you can expect each treatment area to take an hour. Therefore, if you are targeting three areas, your treatment session will take three hours.
How Many Treatment Sessions Will I Need?
The number of treatment sessions you will need depends on several factors, including your body fat distribution and your desired aesthetic. On average, each treatment session removes between 20% and 26% of localized fat cells when large areas are being treated. When small areas are being treated, up to 80% of localized fat cells can be removed.
Based on years of experience, we can confidently say that you will only need one treatment session if you are treating a smaller region of your body, like your neck or underarms. However, depending on your current body fat distribution and aesthetic goals, you may need two or three sessions to fully treat a larger area, like your abdomen.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
You can treat virtually any part of your body with laser lipo. It is most often used to remove excess fat cells from the upper and lower abdomen, back, hips, flanks, and buttocks. However, it can also be used to treat smaller areas, such as the backs of the knees, upper arms, underarms, neck, calves, and chin.
Does Treatment Hurt?
One of the best things about this fat removal method is its comfort. Traditional liposuction requires you to be put to sleep under general anesthesia or local anesthesia and oral sedation. This is time-consuming, expensive, and makes you feel groggy for up to an entire day.
Contrastingly, the laser used for this treatment precisely targets your fat cells and heats them to the point of death and liquefaction. Your surrounding muscle tissue will be warmed as if you were receiving a hot stone massage that penetrated your deepest tissues. This treatment is so comfortable many of our clients fall asleep during their sessions.
How Long Does It Take to See Results?
One of the most compelling benefits of laser lipo compared to invasive liposuction is how quickly you see the results. With traditional liposuction, you experience so much swelling post-op that it takes six months for the swelling to go down and reveal the results of the procedure. With laser lipo, it only takes four to six weeks to see the final results.
You will notice an immediate tightening of your skin and a reduction in circumference of the treatment area. The skin looks tighter due to the heat used during treatment. You will notice an immediate circumference reduction because the fat cells are destroyed. But it takes up to six weeks for your body to fish out all the fat cells.
How Long Do the Results Last?
The results of treatment last a lifetime. Once removed, fat cells cannot be grown back. Therefore, the treated area will permanently have fewer fat cells. Whether you remain satisfied with the results of your treatment is a different story. Sometimes, people lose weight and receive fat removal treatment without correcting the root cause of their weight gain.
It’s easy to say that weight gain happens when you consume more calories than your body needs for fuel. That’s true. But why do people consume excess calories? Often, eating and drinking calories is a response to a feeling, such as boredom, stress, anxiety, depression, or happiness. If you find yourself mindlessly eating, keep a log of when you eat and why.
How Can I Maintain My Weight?
Maintaining your weight isn’t about sticking to a fad diet for the rest of your life. It’s simply a numbers game. If you need 1,396 calories per day to maintain your weight at your current activity level, you can have a 96-calorie shot of whiskey on a Friday night. You just need to make sure that you don’t consume more than 1,300 calories from food and other beverages that day.
The human body is amazing. It knows how much fuel it needs. You just have to learn how to listen to your body’s signals. If you can manage that, you can maintain your weight without counting calories consumed or burned. To stop your body from signaling a constant need for carbs, reset your brain by going keto or paleo for a few weeks. Then listen to the messages you receive.
What if I Can’t Stop Losing Weight?
To maintain the best results, it is important to neither gain nor lose over 10 pounds after treatment. If you’ve hit your goal weight and can’t seem to stop losing weight, don’t worry. It is very unlikely that you suffer from hyperthyroidism or any other medical condition that causes weight loss. You probably just need time to adjust to maintenance.
While most people gain weight once they’ve hit their ideal weight, some people struggle to keep their weight on. They dieted for months or years, and the size of their stomach has shrunk. Their body simply can’t get enough fuel from the fruits and veggies that make up most of their diet. To stop losing weight, add three tablespoons of peanut butter to your diet for 270 calories.
Am I a Good Candidate for This Treatment?
The only way to determine definitively if you are a good candidate for this treatment is to come in for an initial consultation. There are many factors that determine who is a good candidate and which areas will benefit the most from treatment. For this reason, we need to do a physical examination of your target areas and review your medical history and health.
It’s important to get a clear picture of your medical history and current health because this treatment isn’t ideal for everyone. For instance, this is not the right body contouring treatment for you if you have heart disease, other heart conditions, a pacemaker, or a defibrillator. Here’s a brief overview of what else we look for in a good candidate:
Someone With Fairly Elastic Skin
Another advantage laser lipo has over traditional liposuction is its use of heat. When the energy from the laser light warms the treatment area, your skin is encouraged to produce collagen. Collagen is the protein responsible for keeping your skin tight even when localized volume loss has occurred.
However, this is not designed to be a skin tightening treatment. Therefore, the results of the treatment will be better if your skin is already healthy and will quickly snap back into an appropriate position.
Someone Who Is Done Having Children
The best candidates for this treatment are women who are done having children and women. While there is no risk to a woman or her fetus after undergoing this treatment, women who get pregnant after this treatment may need a follow-up treatment once they have given birth and are done nursing.
The reason we don’t recommend this treatment to women who plan to have more children is that your satisfaction is one of our top priorities. Unfortunately, even when pregnancy doesn’t result in fat gain, your skin still takes a beating due to excess fluid volume and hormonal fluctuations, sagging, and negating some effects of your treatment.
Someone Who Doesn’t Smoke
We strongly encourage people considering this treatment to stop smoking in the six weeks leading up to and following their treatment. Primarily, this ensures there is no nicotine in your system to damage existing collagen and slow your skin’s production of stronger, healthier collagen.
A lack of nicotine in your system is important in the weeks following your treatment session because it ensures that your lymphatic system is operating at maximum efficiency. This means that you will see the final results of your treatment sooner.
Someone Who Has a Normal BMI
To be a good candidate for this treatment, you must be within 30 pounds of your goal weight. This ensures you won’t lose so much weight that you end up with excess skin. However, the best candidates for this treatment have a BMI within a healthy range.
If your body mass is already within a healthy range, you will experience the most dramatic results. If you’ve maintained a body mass within a healthy range for at least six months, there is a good chance that your skin is healthy and strong and you will maintain your results for life.
